The humanities are defined as the study of the human culture. They include art, music, theater, history, philosophy, sociology, law, literature, language, basically anything having to do with human experience.Â
When we examine the Humanities we are attempting to answer the eternal question of mankind, "What is the meaning of life? What does it mean to be HUMAN?" In our quest to find the meaning of life, some of us have delved into science trying to find answers in cellular structure or string theory. Others try to give voice to their thoughts through literature, music, and philosophy. Still others, use images to explore the meaning of life which results in visual art. Others still, turn to the past and examine what came before them through history and social studies. Yet, at their core, STEM and Humanities subjects share the same goal, they just approach it in different ways; that doesn't mean one approach is more valid than the other. Rather, STEM and the Humanities go hand-in-hand each relying on the insight of the other to further journey down the path towards understanding what it means to be human.
"Medicine, law business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."
